Is anyone working with “apodments” as part of their rental mix? We are considering one cooperative building for older members (The “Grans" House) with 6-8 apodments sharing 2 kitchens (as well as having access to the common house kitchen) and another coop for grad student types (The “Grads” House) also with 6-8 adodments sharing 2 kitchens (as well as having access to the common house kitchen). There is no reason people could not be owners rather than renters, except that financing could/will be a problem, especially if we end up with interest in having mixed ownership and rental in the same coop (not sure that would even be an option). liz Liz Ryan Cole lizryancole [at] me.com Pinnacle Cohousing at Loch Lyme Lodge Lyme, NH Home 802.785.4124 Lodge 603-795.2141 Mobile 802.274.1511 I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. I love Katie's comment that most "apartment/rental owners are not intersted in a well organized group of tenants." That short phrase says a lot. This one is Erie, CO is. At this point with ground breaking within the next 6 months, our strategy will be to start a meet-up and start a monthly meeting at the library or Alfalfas. Steve the new development owner will give a slide show orientation. He is planning to live there, Sharon and be a participating cohouser. I think one of the differences is that cohousers would not have to do any heavy lifting on financial. In market rate rentals the owner builder takes responsibility for that. So the finance committee would be an easier committee. But as Katie says the tenants have to be well organized. My gut tells me they need to be clear on purpose so it doesn't just become a nice apartment complex. I think the essential nuggets of organization at this point is first making a Meetup to define the vision and having monthly meetings to begin a group. Alan O'Hashi referred me to a sustainable rental cohousing near me in Boulder co. I contacted him and invited him to have coffee. Thanks, Alan. Thanks Sharon and Jude.
