I agree but I dont think the ways they currently try to get people to pay
are reasonable. They want you to subscribe or enter into an ongoing
arrangement, get your contact info - maybe more valuable than the
money they collect depending on what they do with it.  Also
not all articles are comparable and they want you to pay before you
know what you are getting.

I think there needs to be a system to collect to collect tiny amounts for
millions or billions of reads of articles which I speculate might add up
to more than newspapers collect now.  I once tried to estimate the average
cost of an article to a subscriber.  I think it is pennies per article.
Lots of people reading lots of articles could add up.
