At Ashland Cohousing we made a conscious decision to NOT have wood stoves. Our valley has frequent inversions causing poor air quality. With homes so close together, smoke from anyone’s fire will impact anyone else outdoors or with open windows. Fortunately, only one or two of our close neighbors use wood stoves, as their smoke has a significant impact. One time, someone decided to build a rocket stove in their backyard (without checking with the community). This caused a lot of smoke impact since it was used on lovely days when I was outside or wanted to keep my windows open. After discussion, the rocket stove was removed. I love looking at and sitting by a wood fire as much as anyone, but with respiratory sensitivity, I don’t like to breath the smoke.
