It's been a while since I have read these threads, and the subject of
bullying perked my ears up.  I mostly just want to say that women are not
at all immune from misogyny.  And that misogyny seems to come really from a
desire for status.  So yes, the seemingly popular person is likely to
attract those who, usually unwittingly, are seeking to bolster their
status.  Which really is usually all of us, but many are aware of the harm
done when it happens at someone's expense, and many, sadly are not only
unaware, but refuse to see even if made aware.
