We are a few months away from needing to make this decision ourselves and would 
be grateful if you could share your research. 

We're in Oklahoma, which gets plenty of sunlight year-round, so solar should be 
pretty effective. In the gloomy PNW, maybe you should consider running a few 
electric lights or even just conduit for future wiring (unless it's too late 
for that). I appreciate dark skies but I'm a night owl who walks the dog at 2 
AM and I want enough light to see where I'm going.
