Cohousers: More random thoughts. Also keep in mind that Internal Combustion
Engine (ICE) cars are going to be around for a long time. Manufacturers are
making more than twice as many ICE as they are EVs that trend is going to
continue for the next decade or longer. The biggest challenge is, what to do
with the 45 million used ICE cars that change hands each year with more hitting
the streets every day. EVs are a luxury that most people can't afford. For many
of these consumers, reducing their carbon footprint is the farthest thing from
their minds when they're working two jobs so they don't get kicked out of their
apartments.

EV technology is continuously changing. For example, I started out with a
Nissan Leaf that uses the CHAdeMO charging plugs, which are soon to be
obsolete. I ended up trading the Leaf for the ID.4 because of the CCS charging
plug.

You don't want to get tied into hardware that will be outdated as soon as you
install it, which is why 220 outlets give more flexibility over time.

As most of you are likely aware, the biggest limitation to mass EV adoption is
the lack of charging infrastructure with no standardization. Like when ICE cars
took to the road in the 1900s when fueling stations were limited. EV fueling is
in that stage of development.

Good for you for thinking ahead! IMO if I was installing a charging station in
my garage, I?d want to be able to choose the type of charger. You might want to
set some guidelines (e.g. the charging station must be UL listed) and/or
recommend a few particular brands/models, or maybe the interested parties can
get together and do that research as a group.

Cheers

This thread got me to wondering...

Would Smart Grid technology facilitate EV chargers sharing capacity?

Yes it would...  Here is a 2010 article:
https://electricenergyonline.com/energy/magazine/542/article/Electric-
Vehicles-and-the-Smart-Grid-Charging-Forward-.htm

which includes: "The Smart Grid is the key to smart EV charging."

But when will the Smart Grid be available and how does that affect
EV charging plans now?  I could not find anything about this.

Just a heads up from River Song.  We had 4 Level 2 charger cords in parking
areas adjacent to our garages and, one dark night, three of the cords were
cut and stolen - the fourth was hooked to a car and charging at the time.
The feeling of invasion and lack of safety lingers.  Your idea to have the
Level 2's in the garages takes care of the copper thieves.
