I am part of a forming community in Portland OR. I believe we paid for some
NPR advertising in the past but it was expensive & didn't seem to attract
many people.

The advertising that HAS been effective, and affordable is with
the Unitarian Universalists, principally an ad at the back of their print
magazine which is published twice a year. We also have had an online ad.
They have a real estate-cohousing category!
