I don't know about Puget Ridge's list. At Sharingwood to be on the waiting list you have to put up $100 a year and attend 3 meetings, sign the commitments and principles and are expected to be active on at least 1 small group. Since these people are working on creating the second phase of the project, actively doing work on the design and such I'd say they are pretty committed, although the exact costs will determine the fate of a couple of them. Being on the waiting list assures them of the right of first refusal on a unit, in order they join. I think a couple of them are being unrealistic about what they can afford, a common disease amoung the cohousing idealists and a sad situation in many groups. The cost of developing cohousing is typically big bucks, especially in our area where there are so many development regulations which have large costs (such as traffic surveys and PRD amendments etc. etc. etc.) ---------- From: Judy <netmail!BAXTER%55317 [at] VX.CIS.UMN.EDU> To: Rob Sandelin Subject: waiting lists Date: Tuesday, December 28, 1993 4:12PM Rob Sandelin wrote: Puget Ridge Cohousing in Seattle has a waiting list of 12 Sharingwood Cohousing, North of Seattle has a waiting list of 5 Several groups in the area are looking for members so the adage that the more real it looks the better may apply as both groups above are building. However, I might also add that much of the work for those projects is done...... Hmmm. Coincidence or not? I wonder how many people are into the ideal and want to live it but can't committ two years (or more) of meetings to make it happen? Probably lots, >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I'm curious about those waiting lists - how committed are the people? Any financial commitment? What does it mean to be on the waiting list? Are the people involved at all? New View also has waiting lists - and I'm not sure how close they are to building.
