Recent messages have discussed making COHOUSING-L messages available to
a wider audience and in new ways.  (There is also some discussion of this
via off-list email -- this is not directly a cohousing topic of
interest to the entire list; if you're interested, send a note to Fred.)

COHOUSING-L via GOPHER

I'm pleased to announce a related development.  Within a few weeks we
expect to have available a Gopher (see general description of Gopher at
the end of this message) with the COHOUSING-L messages - current and
archived.

Specific access information will be posted when the Gopher is adjusted
and tested a bit more.  Access will require access to a gopher client
(telnet and even email access are possible but not particularly
recommended).   The archives will continue to be available via email using
listserv commands: INDEX COHOUSING-L  ,  GET COHOUSING-L   <filename>
and   SEARCH COHOUSING-L <some_string_or_expression>

Each message is a "document" and can be read individually from a list of
message subjects in chronological order.  Current item heirarchy example:

        1992 archives
        1993 archives
        1994 archives
          Jan 94 archives
          Feb 94 archives
          Mar 94 archives
            <Individual messages by subject>
             .
             .
Other text files can be added to the gopher: FAQ files, contact lists,
community profiles -- existing and organizing , subject indices
to messages etc.  Possibly non text files such as Jake Morrison's
database that structures the list's archives.


INFORMATION OVERLOAD FROM LIST SUBSCRIPTION.

It is my impression that most people who UNSUBSCRIBE from COHOUSING-L
are motivated by the consequences of having too many messages coming
thru their mailbox.  The Gopher will provide an alternative that keeps
ones mailbox less cluttered.

In order to post messages to COHOUSING-L they must still be mailed to
COHOUSING-L [at] uci.com  --from an address that is subscribed to the list.

What's Gopher?

The internet Gopher protocol is designed for distributed document search
and retrieval. The protocol and software follows a client-server model.
Documents reside on many autonomous servers on the Internet.  Users run
client software on their desktop systems (or they could telnet to a client
tho this is discouraged)   While documents (and services)
reside on many servers, Gopher client software presents users  with a
hierarchy of items and directories much like a file system. The Gopher
interface is designed to resemble a file system since a file system is a
good model for organizing documents and services; the user sees what
amounts to one big networked information system containing document
items, directory items, and full-text searching capabilities across
subsets of the information base.
