The second edition of _Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves_ is indeed out. I have a copy. (See availability note at end.) What follows is an overview and comparison to the first edition as well as the table of contents. Fred _Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves-- 2nd ed._ Kathryn M. McCamant and Charles R. Durrett and Ellen Hertzman, 1994, Ten Speed Press, Post Office Box 7123, Berkeley, CA 94707. $29.95. 22 cm x 24.5 cm (8.5" x 9.5") , 288 pages, Paperback is (aqua) green. This is the book that started the cohousing movement in the United States when it was first published in 1988. It is a beautiful book with lots of photographs and detailed descriptions of existing cohousing communities in Europe. It also has some advice for creating cohousing communities. The second edition is significantly expanded to include information including photographs, site plans and floor plans on six cohousing communities in the U.S. There is an additional final chapter about cohousing in the U.S.: "What have we learned? Where are we going?" Ellen Hertzman who is Project Coordinator with The Cohousing Company is the author of the new chapters on American cohousing communities. Topics covered in new final chapter include developing a cohesive organization, working with a developer, the role of the developer, financing, sweat equity, standardizing designs, dealing with the public, "what does the future hold?", single room occupancy and other variations on the cohousing concept.
