As an outside observer, it seems to me that drawing any rigid lines of distinction between cohousing and intentional community will serve at least one unhelpful purpose: it may limit any cohousing situation in terms of what it might *become* over time. That is, if some or all members of a cohousing community have *images* of an unbreachable gulf between themselves and "intentional community", then they may resist any growth that would take their community into a more intentional framework. Thihs would seem a little closed-minded - after all, who knows what the future may hold?
