The best alternatives for carpeting is natural materials...wool, cotton, jute, hemp...the recycled carpet offered locally from Planetary Solutions in Boulder, supposedly off-gases less yet is still made of petrochemicals. I would suggest that for any synthetic carpet you put in you bake the space (turn it up to 90 degrees for a few days with the windows open to force out a lot of the off-gassing. If you can afford it, at Nyland we offered wood floors sealed with a waterbased finished. Good luck. Bill
