I beleive there are quite a number of bartering groups using the LETS model in 
the US.  LETS = Local Exchange and Trading System.  LETS systems use a centrally
kept account of peoples trading balance but no printed currency.  I have a 
feeling that there was some correspondence on LETS on cohousing-l last year.  
I'll
see if I can find a US contact for you, but my files are in a mess since moving 
house some don't be too hopeful.
