After I'd sent that long missive, the shorter answer to this critical 
part came to me:

What's wrong with single family homes?

1. They isolate single families
2. They absorb too much of the families time and money resources
3. They waste too much resources, particularily land and energy.

Since 1 and 2, why then do 3?
