Our "shared wall" housing at EcoVillage at Ithaca is duplex in nature, and is seriously not "row housing", even though the houses are aligned in two roughly parallel rows. We have five different house types, ranging from 16 to 24 feet wide and of varying heights. None of the 15 duplexes has two of the same type house, and in all duplexes the fronts ( & backs) are staggered (imaging sticking two houses together evenly and then sliding one forward 4 or 5 feet). None of the side walls of adjacent duplexes are parallel, but all are within 12 degrees of solar south in orientation. So even though there will be consistancy in exterior materials, it won't (hopefully) look like cookie cutter housing. Ray Gasser, EcoVillage at Ithaca raygasser [at] delphi.com
