Love your spelling but I'm not sure about the apparent assumption that
Western and North American are interchangeable terms.  I maintain that the
Danish bofaellesskaber are but one manifestation of a rather different type
of society than the one you describe (cf my earlier posting on Steven
Borish's book "Land Of the Living").
