It's nice to see so much interest in the land trust model and thought
folks might be interested in information on some resources.
The California State Coastal Conservancy published a book called _The
Nonprofit Primer, A Guide for Land Trusts_ that may be of interest to
people. It's geared for conservation land trusts, but has much wider
application and it's free (or at least it used to be). The book's
chapters cover things like forming a land trust, incorporating a
nonprofit, getting tax exempt status, fundraising, management, etc. To
check on its current availability, contact:

Another good resource is the Institute for Community Economics (ICE),
which promotes Community Land Trusts (CLTs) as a way to create permanently
affordable ownership housing with thought community ownership of the land
(i.e., home owners own their units and lease the land from the CLT for 99
years). ICE has a number of publications, including a newsletter. They
also provide consulting services, technical assistance and interim financing
through their loan fund. Check them out at:

In addition, the State of Vermont promotes and helps finance
agricultural. Some of the folks up there can probably provide some
pointers or assistance. I'll check to see if I can provide contacts if
folks are interested. The folks at ICE can also provide referrals to
Vermont.
I hope this is helpful.
