Hello,
I've been reading this list for several months, gleaning valuable
information for, hopefully, a future move into a cohousing community.
Meanwhile I've been asked to post the message below from Solterra
in North Carolina.
Please direct inquiries regarding Solterra to Carol Eilber, e-mail
address and phone number at the end of the following message about
Solterra.

North Carolina has a new cohousing development. Located in Durham in the
Research Triangle area, recently named as the most desireable place to live
in the United States, "Solterra" will be a passive solar community of 40
homesites on 20 acres, committed to energy efficiency and healthy living
for its members and the earth. Although the location is semi-rural and
includes an 1850's farmhouse which will be renovated for a common house,
the property has city water, sewers and natural gas service. Departing
somewhat from the European model, 34 of the houses will be on individual
lots. These, along with 2 triplex units, will be clustered in three
neighborhoods. The road will be around the perimeter with every site being
accessible by car, but the orientation of the houses will be inward to
village greens with paths leading to the common house across meadows or
woodlands. Landscaping and other features will facilitate neighborhood
interaction on the village greens and around the farmhouse. Open land will
be preserved for organic gardens and two acres of forest will be set aside
as a nature preserve. Located midway between Durham and Chapel Hill, the
site is just three miles from Duke University. Public and private
elementary schools are nearby and a newly planned 23 mile hiking and biking
trail will be developed within a mile of the site. The infrastructure
construction is expected to start in the early fall with construction of
homes starting later in the year. For information contact Carol Eilber by
