One alternative is co-operative housing. We are a group of people (so far 6 adults and one child) who have 23 acres of land just outside Boulder Creek, CA. We are going to build a large house, designed from the beginning to be shared. We envision family suites with bedroom(s), bath and sitting room that are acoustically isolated from the common space (kitchen, dining room, living room, guest space etc). Our estimated cost is $670K, which we plan to divide among four families (we have 3 committed) to make a family share $167.5K, which is much more affordable than a single family house in this area. We're looking for an architect for our project, and a fourth "family". (The current division is actually 1/8 + 1/4 + 3/8 = 3/4). If we can find the fourth, we'll start construction this summer. Personally, I find cohousing less risky than this sort of arrangement, but I've been trying to find/create a cohousing site withing an hour's drive of my work in the Silicon Valley (I telecommute 4 days a week, so I'm willing to go an hour) and it doesn't look like it's going to happen. sarito [at] OSEng.COM (415) 381-1980 Operating Systems Engineering Corporation Unix and Real-time Operating Systems Engineering (415) 380-8105 sarito [at] OSEng.COM
