I think mobile homes are some of the Last Good Deals in the US. Contrary to popular opinion, they can even be of better quality than the stick built homes. Regarding Laurie's very appropriate comment: <<I don't think I will ever be able to afford the swanky 200K co-housing. Is there some other option out there for congenial, community minded people like me? >> I suggest co-op houses. It's just like cohousing, except instead of buying a subdivision, you buy a big house. The common area is the living room and kitchen, and the members own thier own rooms and a share of the whole house. Chuck D gave a presentation on one example of this at the Conference. Or, you could get a group together, buy inexpensive land in the country (must be in a low or no-code area), and circle your mobile homes ... or straw bale houses. This works great, but only if you are far away from places like here. There are definitly plenty of people still creating homesteads for under $60K total. Buzz Burrell Boulder
