I highly recommend your community forge some agreements about pets if you
haven't already.  At a community conference awhile back someone stated that
pet issues can be a *very big* reason for conflict, people leaving, and
worse.  

Think of the possibilities:

barking dogs
tom cat fighting & screaming
cat chasing dogs
child biting cats and dogs
pooping cats and dogs
hole digging dogs

If you're locating in a rural or city edge place, don't let your dogs run
free.  If they get running in packs (even "sweet" dogs) they can endanger
children and livestock, in addition to the wildlife.  Farmers I know feel
completely justified in shooting dogs that threaten/kill their livestock.
