Land Trust Alliance  VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROGRAMS Position Opening
August 10, 1995

The Land Trust Alliance, a growing national organization that unites,
supports, and leads 1,100 local and regional land conservation groups
known as land trusts, seeks a Vice President for Programs.  This is the
number two position in the organization,  responsible for overseeing
all current programs and helping to launch new programs.  The Vice
President reports directly to the President and is a key member of the
senior management team of the Alliance.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a conservation professional with
strong program development and management experience and the
desire and drive to play a pivotal role in shaping the advancement of
the national land trust movement, which has doubled in size in the last
decade.

The Alliance currently has a staff of 15 in its main office in
downtown Washington, DC,  plus small field offices in Seattle and
New York State.


Responsibilities include the following:

Program Oversight and Development

Provides oversight for all programs, which include an information
center, a publications program, an annual conference (the National
Land Trust Rally), public policy, and communications and outreach, as
well as two field programs.

Supervises four program managers and the administrative assistant for
programs; also supervises directors of LTA's two field offices and
ensures close communication between them and the national office.

Coordinates budgeting and annual planning for programs and field
offices.  

Coordinates with development staff on fundraising for programs and
field offices.  Assists in developing strategy, formulating funding
proposals, and making fundraising contacts.

Serves as staff liaison for Board Program Committee.

Participates in long range program planning and develops and
launches new programs agreed to by the President and the Board.
Outreach and Liaison

Serves, along with the President, as a primary outreach and
spokesperson to members.

Manages the National Land Trust Council, an advisory committee of
state land trust leaders.

Develops and manages relationships between LTA and state/regional
land trust networks.

Works with development staff to maintain and expand relations with
Sponsor (land trust) members.

Handles special projects.


Desired Qualifications and Requirements:

Experience including
           minimum 10 years of progressively responsible
           experience as a conservation professional, at least
           part of which has been in a land conservation
           organization.
           at least five years supervisory experience. 
           at least five years of program management experience.
Excellent speaking and writing skills.
Familiarity with the land trust movement will be a strong plus.

Other qualities:  creativity; energy, drive, and enthusiasm; willingness
to work hard; sense of humor; ability to juggle many responsibilities;
excellent people skills.  Good at planning and strategizing, good
judgment.


Salary:  Negotiable, depending on experience.
