Circles of community


In a recent set of philosophical discussions about community the concept =
of sub-groups within communities has come up.  One way to think of this =
is the whole community is a circle, with certain values and operational =
processes which encompass and define the whole group.  Within this =
circle can be smaller circles of folks who hold some passion or interest =
that does not define the larger circle of the community. For example, =
within a cohousing group might be a circle of unitarians, or dancers, or =
beer makers.  It might be that a small circle of gardeners for example =
put energy into a community garden and then over time, the big circle of =
the community changes to embrace organic gardening and food production =
as part of the large community circle.

In a community, smaller circles are usually encouraged as long as they =
don't conflict with the bigger circle and don't claim to be the voice of =
the bigger circle.  In non-community smaller circles may often be viewed =
with predjudice, fear, hate, etc.  Non-tolerance of differences is a =
common demon which pops up throughout human history.

In taking over a condo complex, one unit at a time I think you would =
need to recognize that you are a smaller circle, that you will not =
define the bigger circle until your numbers had pretty much displaced =
the majority of the larger circle.  You could force a hostile takeover =
in that most condo associations vote by 51% majority and so, with 51% =
you could create a commonhouse, institute whatever large circle setups =
you wanted and those who didn't want to be part of that bigger circle =
would sell out, and your smaller circle could be ready to buy the units, =
and so it goes.

I think to make this work out you would need to begin recruiting and =
always have a pool of people around who wanted to do cohousing.
