David Mandel urged us to give up the idea of "semi-rural" cohousing, because it
perpetuates wasteful, resource-eating, auto-based development and sprawl.
As the developer of Eno Commons, a semi-rural (in feeling) 10 acre site (albeit
10 minutes from the center of downtown) which looks likely to turn out all
white, I agree with you whole-heartedly. I am extremely excited about Eno
Commons, and don't have a moment's hesitation in saying that I feel its
development is worthwhile. At the same time, my dream has been to take an urban
in-fill parcel and do in-town development or rehab. I thought the choice of
Richard Register for the keynote at this year's conference was as inspired as
last year's choice of Carolyn Estes. I'm not sure I'll ever want to live in
urban cores as extremely dense as Richard advocates. But his ideas have really
caused me to think. I've been telling our City of Durham planners about his
ideas, and about "depaving," and unearthing in-city creeks. They have been just
as jazzed up about this as I was.
