Bruce Koller of Old Oakland Cohousing Group had the novel idea of getting folks to do coho-style dinners (a couple people cook for the rest on a rotating basis) instead of potlucks as a way of socializing potential members into seeing the advantages of a common eating space. A brilliant idea ... and I'm sure others have used one or another variant of it along the way, as we did many times in the years before moving in. We bought a big set of plastic dishes (still have 'em today) and held regular meals in the park a block from our site. For a time they were even weekly and had 20 or more regular participants. Occasionally potluck, but usually coho style, with embryonic cooking teams doing it all on a voluntary basis. Worked great and kept our morale up knowing what we had in store when the real common house would finally be built. David Mandel, Southside Park Coho, Sacramento
