I would add that the term "unit" reflects the fact that houses are primarily
understood as consumer commodities - products - rather than as places to live.

Consider that housing (unit) starts are one of the key economic indicators.
Why?  Because when you buy a housing unit, you have to have a steady source
of income (a job), probably will want to fill it with all sorts of consumer
goodies (keep the wheels of the economy turning) and will be maintaining the
flow of capital investments that seem to be the only measure of wealth we
have (GDP).

For those of us that would rather think of this product as a home, well,
that's why there's cohousing!
