Berkeley Cohousing held its "grand opening" celebration yesterday from 4 to 7 p.m. The gods were with us, as the first rainstorm of the season waited until 7:15 to blow in. Katie McCamant and Chuck Durrett, our project manager/architect, helped us orchestrate a successful event. Media coverage was excellent. A 2-page press release was reprinted verbatim (with big photo) in the local newspapers that cover Berkeley and nearby areas, and the San Francisco Chronicle will be running a huge photo feature about our project in the October 15th edition. The NBC TV affiliate in San Francisco (Channel 4) sent a reporter and camera crew here the day before our celebration (staying through our common dinner), and they put together a terrific 2-1/2 minute piece for the late evening and early morning news programs. For other groups itching to get coverage like this, look for an article about working with the media by PR specialist Kay Abrahams in the fall issue of the CoHousing Journal. (Standard plug: $30 for 4 quarterly issues to The CoHousing Network, P.O. Box 2584, Berkeley, CA 94702. Or, better yet, JOIN the "new and improved" CoHousing Network; the additional money goes to support the fledgling national nonprofit that was launched in Seattle a few weeks ago.) Don Lindemann
