Jan. Note: (about 2 screens long, Sorry) Cohousing-L activity. After Rob's Jan 12th message: "The decline of cohousing L" which got 9 replies on the 12th, there was a noticeable spurt in list activity. I decided to analyze a bit: period msg/day (equiv. msg/month) Dec '97 2.0 61 1/1-1/12 4.0 124 1/12-1/31 6.9 215 Jan '98 5.5 172 The lives of mailing lists (ala gaia) are complicated and hard to predict. ---- Also there were 5 messages with "Re: COHOUSING-L digest ..." subject lines (a no-no -- see below). Admonitions about this (and excessive quoting and posting unsubscribe requests to everone via the list) have not seemed to prevent these problems. I remind you that when you post with one of these inconsiderate features, everyone else sees it with your email address (and usually your name) as sender attached... And such messages live on in the archives (see below). You would not knowingly embarrass yourself in a meeting, please avoid it here by taking considerable care in composing messages to the mailing list. But dont fear a mistake, we all make them, but beware of making the same mistake twice :) (Please dont apologize over the list either; one of my goals in managing this list is to minimize the volume of messages that are not about cohousing.) Thanks on behalf of all subscribers (about 500). Fred Cohousing-L list manager, owner-cohousing-L [at] cohousing.org <end Jan. Note> U-N-S-U-B from Cohousing-L, How to In order to unsubscribe from COHOUSING-L: Send an email message to listproc [at] cohousing.org (where all commands are sent) from the account that is subscribed to the list with the following one line command in the message body (no subject): UNSUBSCRIBE COHOUSING-L Note that your name is not required (or allowed) after the list name. If you have problems with your subscription, please email the list manager directly (repeatedly if needed) at owner-cohousing-L [at] cohousing.org PLEASE DO NOT post messages to the list about individual list problems including unsubscribe or subscribe requests. ALTERNATIVES TO JUST UNSUBSCRIBING If your reason for unsubscribing is information overload (the most frequent reason...) you may wish to consider one of strategies other than just dropping your subscription discussed below -- Digest mode, reading archives periodically. ***** DIGEST MODE ***** Use the command: SET COHOUSING-L MAIL DIGEST When users set their mail mode to "digest", they will receive postings from the list only once a day, bundled as one message. This is great for people who are annoyed by a lot of messages or who only check there mail once a day. When replying to a message in a 'digest', please manually enter the appropriate Subject/Thread -- otherwise your reply will have the subject: "RE: COHOUSING-L digest ##" which isn't very helpful. ***** ARCHIVES ***** An alternate way to read or browse the COHOUSING-L messages via the archives -- current and archived. The archive is updated automatically and therefore always up-to-date. The archives are accessed thru our web site at www.cohousing.org. (under Resources) Reading the archives does not require one to be a subscriber but posting messages does require one to be a subscriber. There is "postpone mode" which allows one to be a subscriber and post but not receive messages by mail. See the welcome message for details. Get a fresh copy of the welcome message with the command: INFO COHOUSING-L This message is posted around the first of each month. Updated 1/31/98 Fred H.
