Hi everyone, I'm a junior art major at Smith College and am interested in pursuing architecture/community development after graduation. I'm particularly interested in finding architectural firms that specialize in cohousing design and might be looking for an intern. If anyone has information on any opportunities, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Kathryn Ervin __________________________________________________________ A little bit more about myself, in case you're interested: Perhaps because I grew up in an isolated suburb, I am interested in how we can cultivate better communities in post-suburban America. I have been interested in art since childhood and have studied at Smith, Rhode Island School of Design, Cleveland Institute of Art, and Oxford. Academically, I have focused on the fine arts, but I'm quickly realizing that I want to apply my creativity towards more people-oriented, less academic design (architecture). In fall of '97, I discovered my love for community living by working at a Buddhist monastery and participating in the Arcosanti <http://www.arcosanti.org> five-week workshop in architecture & construction. Last summer I volunteered in a city planning office, just to see what government planning is like, but I realized that wasn't for me. This summer I would love the chance to work with a similarly-interested architect or community organization. (Okay, this is turning into an online resume, so why not continue?...) Relevant coursework: Architectural Design for Diversity and Social Change; 2- and 3-dimensional design; Design with Computers; Cities and Suburbs; and many drawing and painting courses, including The Five College Drawing Seminar. Activities and leadership: College--Dorm Vice President & Social Chair, Secretary of Art Resources Committee, Habitat for Humanity volunteer, Taekwondo Club member. High school--four years as literary magazine editor and varsity soccer player, debate team VP, Outing Club member & Outward Bound backpacker. Computer skills: Well versed in both PC and Mac platforms, Word, Web browsers, HTML, Photoshop, scanning utilities, Illustrator, Quark Xpress, and others. Willing to familiarize myself with AutoCAD before the summer. Awards: Smith Dean's List, National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar, Scholastic Art Awards National Gold Key, Concours National de Francais--1st in state, 3rd nationally. (And of course I've had some random jobs.) I guess that's it for now!
