We are in the final 3 weeks or so before the start of the DK99 tour of Cohousing in the Copenhagen, Denmark area. (see www.cohousing.org) I think of this trip as not only benefiting the individuals who are going but contributing to the collective knowledge of the cohousing movement in the US. Many of us going have been involved in encouraging the development of cohousing in the US generally. I expect we will be sharing what we learn at the October conference in Amherst. We are belatedly realizing that meeting Jan Gudmand-Hoyer would be very desireable. He was (is?) much involved in the development of the cohousing idea in Denmark (see his name in the cohousing book -- _Cohhousing_ by McCamant and Durret ). There is extensive coverage of Jan's cohousing ideas in the book and the book is dedicated to him. He might even be called the father of the cohousing idea. I think he now uses the term "third generation" cohousing to refer to designs with a glass covered pedestrian street. I would like to see a Danish example of this. Windsong in BC, CA is an example tho I could not find the term on their website after a quick look. Does anyone know what Jan is doing more recently and how to contact him? Another question I have is whether there is any cohousing (or intentional communities - preferably toward the cohousing end of the spectrum of ic's) in central Copenhagen. So far I am not aware of any. They all seem to be in suburban locations. Of course what is "suburban" there is probably somewhat different than what we think of as "suburban" here. I am in contact with a community in central Stockholm that I hope to visit. Lastly I'd be interested in seeing and comparing communites that vary in their level of state support and encouragement. I have heard that some have accepted a tradeoff of more government support for some more formal 'open occupancy' rules that may lead to a somewhat less average level of commitment to the community by some people. (that probably was not worded well, sorry. In fact this whole message is less well researched than I'd like but time is getting short so I decided I had to post what I could now) Fred -- Fred H.
