While we are on the topic (are we?) of community oriented books, another
of my absolute favorites is "A Gate to Women's Country" by Sherri Tepper.
Another fantasy book.  The ending to the book packs a powerful surprise.
One of the things I like about Sherri Tepper's books is the depths to
which she goes to create her literary world.  You simply are transported
to another community and see it's inner workings.  Oh, at first you don't
see how it all fits together, but at the end, you do.  She is generally,
in my opinion, making commentary on society and human goals.  But in the
guise of fiction.
