WELCOME TO SOLTERRA! We're a new passive solar co-housing community on the western edge of Durham County, Durham, North Carolina. It's country living at its finest with city conveniences including the cultural advantages of several colleges and universities, including Duke and UNC Chapel Hill. There are good schools, shopping, hiking and biking trails. Museums and fine restaurants abound. What about Solterra? We're nestled on twenty acres of woodlands and open fields; there are forty homesites, each with direct car access. All the homes are free standing with the exception of two sets of duplexes. They are architect or designer planned to suit individual tastes, but must meet Architectural Review Board and covenant requirements. Each home accesses one of three pathways, all leading to the common areas. No need to cross a road! We offer all the best aspects of co-housing. There are ample play spaces for our children, including an adult friendly tree house. That means accessible! Our organic gardens were a great success this year, with crops of flowers and vegetables. A group effort succeeded in erecting an effective deer fence. It's still a happiness, however, to look out the window at the adjoining woods, and see the mother deer and her three babies paying a morning visit. There's a tree swing, a huge sand box, a sliding pole. Our common house is in the planning stage. We hold parties in our Little Common House, a large shed that was part of the original farmstead. We eat together each week at potlucks in the shed or at each others' homes, or out in the meadow. We cater to a variety of eating styles from macrobiotic, vegan, and vegetarian, to meat preferences. Solterrans range in age from not-quite-here to over seventy, and people come from all over the country. We're care givers, teachers, business people, health care professionals, artists, musicians, and writers. We work by consensus. We play by heart. There are currently fourteen families in residence, and our non resident members are active participants in the community. By year's end, there will be twenty families living here. There are only a few lots left at Solterra. We're looking for a few dedicated co-housing families to join us. Want to hear more? Please contact: Judith Krassner Email: GJKrass [at] juno.com. </XMP>
