I assume this would depend on the set-up and construction.  Our duplexes are 
separated by a double wall with insulation in both walls; I'm not sure if 
there are vapor barriers also.  I doubt smoke could get through a vapor 
barrier, but I don't know.  Maybe decades of heavy smoking could penetrate 
the walls?  We only have one smoker and she's not in yet, so we have no 
experience with this.  

If you force the smoker outside the home because you're worried about smoke 
getting through the walls, then you have to think about smoke drifting in 
from the outside.  If you're in a city with apartment style condos, then of 
course the smoke could get out the door and down the halls.

Now if you could just get the smokers to take a shower, change their clothes 
and use face masks when they leave their houses...
