Yes, the "heroism" is meant as a double edged construct.

The idea comes from Dr Lynne Jacobs, a contemporary gestalt psychoanalyst
(LA). She came over to Australia and noted that in comparison, the US as a
culture is further along a continuum towards turning individualism into a
heroic thing. Land of the brave. Contrast that with Danish culture.

Graham Meltzer describes cohousing being a precise response to perceived
social problems of the late 20th century, ..., and the breakdown of
community in particular.

It seems to me that cohousing, in relation to this mind set, evokes shades
of grey in the minds of it's participants.
