Some of the best uses of common space I've seen have involved designs
allowing dual usage.

So, using furniture on wheels, the common space enables childcare during the
day and a meals area at night.

I also really like the use of sliding or rolling doors to make desk spaces
disappear when required. Here in sunny Melbourne, there is an increasing use
of sails to turn exposed outside areas into a semi-enclosed space.
