Hi -

I'm actually in the odd position of being strongly opposed to a full-time TV in
the commons house *and* being "the member most likely to carry her TV over to
the commons house for a special event". And I don't feel any tension over this
apparent contradiction.

I don't want TV in the commons house full-time because I think casual TV use
rots not only brains but social connections that would spring up if the "on"
button weren't so darned easy to push. My dad was a creative director at one of
the biggest advertising agencies in the country and he raised us to be proper
skeptics of all things TV. If I cannot always resist the siren call of the
silly set, how am I to believe the rest of my neighborhood will - especially
the kiddiddles?

On the other hand, I think TV-viewing can be a planned social event with many
redeeming values. So I lugged my set over for Election Night, the ACC
basketball tournament (a religious event in these parts) and most recently for
a 6-hour marathon viewing of Pride and Prejudice (the Firth/Ehle version -
highly recommended). I know I will cheerfully lug it over many times in future
- but it doesn't live there.
