In a message dated 01-09-03 09:54:30 EDT, you write: << Could we please refrain from trivializing the murder of millions of human beings by comparing them to CATS????? >> I would have to agree that there is a strongly polarized "fashion statement" these days that is anti cats -- from anti cats calendars to posters to greeting cards. I have never seen any one laughing at a greeting card showing a human drenched in soap and desperately clinging to a branch above a large body of water. This is sick humor. More seriously, however, it is accepting attitudes of hatred or intolerance that lead to distain, distain to abuse: both in individuals and in society as a whole. I have never met a person who made sick abuse the cat jokes who did not also make sick abuse the people jokes (or worse.) There is a documented statistical connection between violence (That should include murder, don't you think?) towards animals and violence in general. Abuse of animals has been shown to be a precurser to violence towards people. As a society and as a community, I beleive we make a big mistake by engaging in intolerance or by trivializing mistreatment. << Caring for your animals is one thing, anthropomorphizing them is quite another. >> The committment we have to those less powerful (animals) than we transfers right over to the committment we (as a society) have to those humans less fortunate or less powerful than we. If we were more conscientious in our relations to animals, it would be safe to say we would be at least as consientious towards humans. I think it would be safe to say that a goal of cohousing is to create harmonious community. To me that means both balance and peace which can only be achieved by " "finding common ground" and giving up intolerance and polarization.
