Cohousing-L Mailing List: Laundry in the Common House

I'm a big fan of doing laundry in the common house.  Jasmine, If you are 
like me, you will do laundry when you run out of clean underwear even 
if--goddess forbid--you might have to drive out to a laundromat! I can't 
see any reason to do it one minute sooner:0)  I've visited 35 cohousing 
communities and those households where it seems to me that washers and 
dryers in individuals' homes are a necessity are those where the CH is some 
distance from my house AND there's really cold slippery weather in the 
winter.  One or  couple of kids in diapers combined with one of those other 
reasons completely justifies one's "own" laundry equipment too.

In relation to Liz's comment about resale value, I'm thinking that new 
people (especially those who've been waiting eagerly for a unit to become 
available in your community)buying in are not likely to be cranky about the 
lack of washer/dryer hookup or find your house worth all that much more if 
it has a hookup.  After all, they, presumably are just about as excited 
about cohousing as you were as the first owner of the unit. If the culture 
of the place is that most or all the residents do their laundry in the 
common house, then it is likely to be taken for granted by new people as 
"the way we do things around here." You know, when in Rome......

More on resale value.......At Doyle St. where I lived for 8 years, we had 
11 parking spaces for 12 units and each month one household parked on the 
street.  When the fabulous garden was built into what was our already tight 
parking lot, one more space was lost so now everyone agreed to park outside 
two months out of every year.  This plan was instituted just as I was 
getting ready to sell my unit to move to Swan's Market Cohousing,  and my 
buyer took it completely in stride.
