Re: cohousing and the press

We were on local television--I can't say the appearance did us any good.
I didn't notice anyone coming to information sessions based on the news story.
The way they did it was pretty, well...it wasn't exactly underhanded, but
let's just say it didn't really do justice to the cohousing movement.
They created this segment called "real life commune" and then filmed
bits and pieces of scenes from various co-op houses. Then, halfway through the
segment (but without changing the title) they segued into cohousing. They
filmed Cambridge Cohousing and they filmed members of our group
supposedly having a "meeting." Only the meeting was totally fake, because
they didn't give us any time to plan a real meeting!

Since we had no opportunity to show our telephone number on television,
there was no way anyone could call us if they wanted to get in touch with us.
I guess my advice would be, print up T-shirts with your logo and phone number
real big on the front and back and then stand directly in front of the camera
so there's no way they can avoid photographing it!

Neshama Abrams is a really good public relations person who helps cohousing
groups cope with the news media--if you want, I'll be happy to send you her
phone number.

Good luck!
