Gwen Noyes, who lives here at Cambridge Cohousing (and is a partner in Oaktree Development) has asked me to post this for her. Oaktree Development is currently renovating an existing small apartment building in the Boston suburb of Medford in such a way that it lends itself very well to a cohousing way of living. The "classic" 24-unit brick structure was built very sturdily in 1929, and is now being substantially rehabbed into both condominium and rental units. It is within a couple minutes' walking distance to Medford's attractive, historic urban center. Good express bus service into Boston is readily available and I 93 is a few blocks away. The building affords wonderful south facing views over Boston. "Cohousing Cousin" is the term we're using for the development (coined by Chuck Durrett) because the property is already being renovated, the financing is in place, renovation costs have firm estimates, and the sale and rental prices will soon be determined. If a modified cohousing group forms, it will need to grow its ability to make decisions together while the renovation is happening. The community would need to come together without the traditional trials of development. Occupancy begins this spring, 2002, so the window of opportunity is limited. If the individuals who eventually buy and live in this building choose to function as a cohousing group, there will be space to be finished which lends itself to shared meals and community life. Sales information: Of the 24 units, 6 are currently vacant and under renovation. We will know very soon exactly how many will be available for purchase and for rent.
