University City, MO-- November 1, 2002 - Village in the City announced that
it has acquired property from the City of University City located at the
southwest corner of Vernon and Westgate Avenues. A 20-unit apartment-style
condominium building will be designed as a cohousing community on the
one-half acre site. Construction will begin in 2003, with occupancy in early
2004.

Village in the City is a diverse group of local residents, open to new
participants, who will create a family-friendly, self-managed condominium
community that consists of private individual apartments as well as
extensive common spaces. Eco Housing Corporation, chosen for their
experience in cohousing, will be the developer. The group will generate an
architectural design based on the cohousing model, a form of collaborative
housing with a strong sense of community. Typical features of cohousing
include extensive common space, resident management, and design input. With
over sixty cohousing communities nationally, this form of housing is an
emerging trend in home building. Each residence will be conventionally
financed and privately-owned.

Members of Village in the City have the support of the neighborhood
association, U-City East and the Ward 2 Councilmember, Shelley Welsch, who
states, "Village in the City will be another asset for the already vibrant
urban community of Parkview Gardens. Families will be able to take advantage
of a safe place to live with many recreational and educational resources
nearby."
