I would hypothesise that there are cultural differences between northern and southern California. A broad sweeping question about the differences between northern and southern California invites a matching broad hypothesis to match. A hypothesis about factors indicating a statistical probability, using a psychometric approach commonly used in marketing. Geert Hofstede who is another lead of an academic in presenting cultural differences in this kind of "correlates with" thinking. In Europe, cohousing is culturally more Denmark than Poland. Here in Australia it's more likely to fit the multi-cultural inner suburb near Melbourne University and less likely to be adopted in blue collar outer suburbia. Perhaps people living next to a third world country have a more economically oriented, more survival-oriented mindset (ie. thinking of Maslow's hierarchy of needs), than people who live in a more optimistic environment such as northern California. I've never been to either Florida or San Diego, but can you imagine cohousing to take of on a military base or Cuban exile community? What makes coastal Washington State culturally so different from Spokane, what distinguishes Austin from Dallas, Davis from San Diego? I think it's a momentum generated through a clustering of enough people with a similar mindset (eg. similar to Porter's study of clusters creating competitive advantage). Perhaps cohousing as an expression of innovation correlates with accommodating homosexuality, without feeling a need to be defensive or feeling compromised. This discussion format has confirmed that cohousing correlates correlates with a political leaning to the left, but not to a dogmatic extent.
