While the use of cars is essential in most people's lives at one time or another, it would be nice to see communities figuring out ways to minimize the number of cars, and thus the parking required. Parking is a one-use, dedicated space that is either sitting empty or holding a car that is sitting idle. Foot for foot, it is probably the most underused space that we still require. I've just inquired of Flexcar how one could arrange to have a car in the parking lot that could be reserved by the normal means. They do have a program where they park cars in business lots for use of the business. One car, close by, that is easily reserved and maintained by someone else, might replace several cars that are only used occasionally (second cars for example).
