At our urban cohousing complex, our kitchens are, for the most part, small. We 
don't hang out in our kitchens because we can't sit in them. It would make much 
more sense for us to have the living rooms on the spine. But we don't. Of 
course, there are more of us in 2d, 3d, and 4th floor units who don't have the 
spine at their doorstep, so for them, it is a moot point.
