We can talk about whether we think the preponderance of white folks in
cohousing is good, bad, or neutral, but since in my experience most people
in cohousing are mostly white, that's what you're going to get in a
documentary video. It would feel unethical to me to somehow try to make a
video that featured a higher percentage of people of color than actually
LIVE in our communities -- it would seem like false advertising!

There are people of color living in cohousing. Seeking them out in the production of a video would be very important in my mind. I can remember when Sears Robuck catalogue featured its first black model - and now look where we are in the advertising world - it SELLS to be inclusive and progressive and not exclusively white. I made a point of including the few slides I have of people of color in the production of our new slide show "What is Cohousing". I wanted potential non-white families attending cohousing information meetings to feel comfortable and welcomed. I also listened carefully when my test audience said that the first draft of my slide show was too family focused. I then spent substantial time and effort to revise the entire show to be more "elder-friendly". And of course, it is a better show because of this feedback.

If you are interested in the show or if you have good pictures of people of color in cohousing that you are willing to share for the improvement of this show, please contact me.
Thanks,
Laura
