Out here in the heat of the Sacramento Valley summers, we have retrofitted our houses with white roofs and insulation to great benefit. We also have evening breezes and open the houses up at night and close them in the day. Many of us have evaporative "swamp" coolers for the worst days when it is above 100. But these latter practices and tools probably don't work in a high humidity area. We have 10-30% humidity during the summer so these work well. Another technique that a local scientist did some studies on use micro spray sprinklers on his roof set to a thermostat so every time the roof got to a certain temperature, the sprinklers would cool the roof. He set his interior air conditioning at the same level with and without the sprinklers and recorded impressive energy savings. He had a near flat roof so I don't know how it will work with roofs pitched for snow.
