Last weekend, our Yellow Plum Cohousing group went through the “Getting Started” workshop by Kelly ScottHanson of Cohousing Resources. It was an emotionally exhausting weekend, with many tears shed, more than a few by me. But at the end, we had a new identity – Yellow Plum Commons – and a new sense of what it will take to create a cohousing community in the Tri-Cities. This creating cohousing thing is tough. We are building our hopes and dreams, at the same time we are trying to build with sticks and bricks. In our particular case, the problem is that we live in a rather conservative part of Washington State. Here’s the one piece that I really heard: Are there 18 families that want to live in a cohousing community in the Tri-Cities? Probably. Do we have the time, money, and resources to find them? Maybe not. To any group in Forming stage of development, I encourage you to contact Cohousing Resources and arrange for this workshop (or a similar workshop by the CoHousing Company folks). Kelly is an excellent presenter. She quickly gets to the heart of the issues, and handles complicated and emotionally complex topics both thoroughly and compassionately. For us, it was time and money extremely well spent.
