Kathryn McCamant, co-author of Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves, an architect and project manager, who has worked on dozens of cohousing communities and who is an 11-year resident at Doyle Street Cohousing in Emeryville will be the presenter. Please join us at Muir Commons in Davis, California from October 3 -5. Participants can attend the Friday evening session only, the day-long Saturday session, or both. We are also offering an optional Sunday session. "Katie McCamant is the "momma" of cohousing in North America. You won't find a better balance between enthusiasm and realism based on solid experience anywhere in the cohousing movement." A longtime cohouser Kicking off the weekend on Friday, October 3 will be a two-hour talk and slideshow for people who are relatively new to cohousing and those who would benefit from more detailed knowledge about cohousing. The slide show is about the cohousing movement and cohousing communities in Denmark where they originated and in North America. Along with the book, Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves (deemed by the New York Times "a bible for the cohousing movement" and available at the slide show for an additional $25, this evening presentation provides an inexpensive introduction and exposure to cohousing. People at all stages of exploration are welcome to participate. On Saturday, October 4, there will be extensive discussion on how to organize a cohousing community. Participants will learn from the lessons of other cohousing groups about developing realistic timelines and about forming development groups. The afternoon sessions will focus on group process, agenda setting, and group facilitation. Participants will learn how to move from forming a group to site acquisition and growing their group. The day will close with a consideration of critical components in successfully moving forward. This is the most comprehensive training day available to individuals and groups interested in building a cohousing community. We urge you to work within your community to encourage individuals to participate in this event, to take full advantage of the combined experiences of those who have been involved in cohousing for many years. On Sunday, October 5, a session will be held for groups close to forming or which have recently formed. The day's discussion will be focused on the intricacies of financing and group formation applied specifically to those in attendance. For information on seminar costs and to register for the event or any part of it, please go to the Cohousing Association's website at www.cohousing.org <http://www.cohousing.org/> or call our office at 510-844-0865.
