There is a somewhat new paving material which uses the soil onsite and mixes
it with a natural substance which turns it into an asphalt type of
material - smooth, very durable. I'm not sure if it works too well for
walks or not. It is also semi-permeable. The company is in Phoenix, AZ,
but I can't remember the name. Might be worth a look, if not for walks than
at least for parking lots.
