<< I think many cohousers found themselves getting in further debt in order to "make it" into cohousing, ... While some intentional communities don't require the kind of financial resources cohousing demands, a not-that-distant issue of Communities magazine underlined the difficulties many face in self-supporting themselves once they join >> I am in more debt due to joining cohousing and have investigated other intentional communities. My age seems to be a problem. I am 53. I was concerned that the health care options of intentional communities that I visited would not accommodate someone with, say, hemiparesis due to a stroke. One community had an age limit--I am within a year or so of the limit. If I joined, then had a major health care problem, would I be perceived as taking from the community without having given enough? Would I be a detriment to the financial well-being of the community? These concerns were a major part of my decision to stay in cohousing.
